Our Plans for 2020 and Beyond!
As many of our loyal customers know, we started out as a micropub based in Heswall a little over two years ago specialising in a wide offering of quality craft beers and ales. Fast forward two years and it’s hard to imagine then how much our business (and indeed many others) would be affected by a global virus.
In today’s article I want to talk a little about how we have managed the Coronavirus crisis and what our plans are for the future.
Once it became clear that we would have to shut our doors and strict social distancing policies were to come into force, we knew we had to make drastic changes to our business model or we may not have survived. So what did we do?
In January 2020 I had Mark from Herd Marketing design The Beer Lab its first website – a basic information only website that gave a quick overview of where to find us, some contact details and links to our social media pages. When Mark built the site, he advised me that should I wish to sell online, the website could be scaled and developed into an e-commerce site.
So, once we knew the pub would be closed for an extended period, Mark set to work on developing the website. Between us we have managed to add over 100 new beers to the site, and have worked tirelessly to create a user friendly site that allows customers to order 24/7 and 365 days a year.
In the past month or so we have also worked on extending our customer base. We started to ship beers out to customers from further afield than just the Wirral, and are already building up a loyal customer base from across the UK.
There have been some interesting experiences so far and it has been good to see that so many people really like a good quality craft beer – whether they are local customers or from further afield.
As expected, some of our most popular beers have been from Polly’s Brew Co. and their excellent choice of IPA. Additionally, our range of Porter and Stouts have also been well received – certainly Tiny Rebel’s Marshmallow Porter, Stay Puft!
Looking ahead to the rest of 2020 and beyond, we plan on continuing to operate The Beer Lab online and once we are given the all clear to reopen the pub, our doors will be open. To operate in this way and expand in a way that stays true to our core values, we have decided to partner with Mark from from Herd Marketing and he is going to be looking after the website, marketing and online side of the business whilst Ryan will focus on procurement, operations and the pub.
To facilitate this growth, we are in the process of opening a warehouse that will hold, manage and fulfil online orders. Our aim for this is to grow our online presence, improve our distribution and continue to expand our already fantastic range of craft beers. To clarify, we will also be reopening the pub – only when safe to do so and will follow government guidelines regarding social distancing.
It has been an interesting past couple of months and we would like to personally thank each and every customer for their custom and support during this period.
Here’s to the rest of 2020 and beyond,
Ryan & Mark
